Vincent Poon :: Ports of Call - Rhodes

First time to this Greek Island which I have longed to see before. It is the island where the Knights of St. John occupied and built a Medieval walled city before driven out by the Ottoman Turks, as well as the home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Colossus of Rhodes, which was a gigantic statue of Helios the Sun God that stood at the entrance of the harbour before toppled by the earthquake at 227 BC.

Album: Mandraki Harbour and the sea front

We walked all the way from the old City to the Mandraki Harbour was to visit the place where the Colossus of Rhodes was, which was definitely one of the most awesome Wonder of the Ancient World had it not been destroyed by the earthquake!

Album: Rhodes Old City

When you approach the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. There are roughly 200 streets or lanes that simply have no name. This is also the town the knights of St. John lived until they fled to Malta

Album: Palace of the Grand Masters

A fortress within fortress, this was the seat of 19 Grand Masters. Built in the 14th century and was blown up by an accidental explosion in 1856. It was then restored by the Italians in the 1930s as a holiday home for Mussolini and King Victor Emmanuel III.
